The Athens Metro is an underground rapid transit system serving the capital of Greece. It was constructed in 2000 in order to decrease traffic congestion and clean up the environment by reducing Athens' smog level.

Nowadays, the two Lines of the Athens Metro (red and blue lines) serve approximately 700.000 passengers on a daily basis. In addition, Line 1 of ISAP (green one) serves more than 415.000 passengers. Therefore, combined with the Tramway and the Suburban Railway, the Metro System contributes to the development of a Modern Transit Model and to the enhancement of the every-day life in Attica Basin.

Line 2 (Red Line) Stations:
Aghios Dimitrios (or else Alexandros Panagoulis) - Dafni - Aghios Ioannis - Syngrou Fix - Acropolis - Syntagma - Panepistimio - Omonia - Metaxourghio - Larissa Station - Sepolia - Aghios Antonios.

Line 3 (Blue Line) Stations:
Athens International Airport - Koropi - Peania Kantza - Pallini - Doukissis Plakentias - Chalandri - Aghia Paraskevi - Nomismatokopeio - Cholargos - Ethniki Amyna - Katehaki - Ambelokipi - Megaro Moussikis - Evangelismos - Syntagma - Monastiraki - Keramikos - Eleonas - Egaleo.

Athens Metro: Acropolis Station

One of the unique characteristics of the Athens Metro is the fact that its construction was actually the vessel for the execution of large-scale archaeological excavation works. More specifically, in the framework of the Metro construction, the greatest archaeological excavation in the Athens area was carried out (spanning over an area of 79000m2), which revealed more than 50.000 ancient articles. Today, the ancient articles are in public display for the first time in six prestigious Metro Stations, inviting thus every rushing passenger, either Greek or foreigner, to examine and admire them.
