Kerameikos is a neighborhood of Athens city that spreads to the northwest of the Acropolis, at the end of Ermou street and includes an extensive area both within and outside the ancient city walls. The walls of Athens were constructed in the 5th century BC by Themistocles and divided the area into two sections. These walls had two gates, that of Dipylon and the Sacred Gate and outside them was the official cemetery of the city, used from the 9th century BC till the late Roman period.
Nowdays, at the archaeological site of Kerameikos, one can see ruins of public buildings, impressive civilians graves and military tombs, while there is also a Museum with findings from the excavations that took place there.
At the area of Kerameikos there are many cafes, bars, night clubs, as well as modern restaurants with authentic Greek cuisine or international dishes. Indeed, Kerameikos is listed among the hot spots in Athens for night amusement, which explains the crowds gathered there every night, especially on weekends.
